CogAT Scores Explained: A Parent's Guide to the Cognitive Abilities Test

The email from school arrives on a Thursday afternoon: your child's CogAT results are attached. You open the PDF expecting something readable and instead find a wall of abbreviations, SAS, APR, stanine, three different sets of numbers for the same test, and a mysterious code like "9A" or "7B(V+)" that looks more like a seat assignment than a description of your child's mind. Somewhere in there, apparently, is the answer to whether your child gets into the gifted programme. Nobody has explained which number matters.
If that's roughly where you are, you're in good company. The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is one of the most widely used tests in American schools, and one of the least explained to the families on the receiving end. The report is dense because the test is genuinely trying to say several different things at once, and once you know what each piece means, it's far less cryptic than it looks.
This guide walks through what the CogAT actually measures, how to read every number on the score report, what those profile codes mean, and, just as importantly, what the test cannot tell you about your child, including why a genuinely bright child can come home with an unremarkable score.
What the CogAT Is, and What Schools Use It For
The Cognitive Abilities Test is a group-administered reasoning test: your child sat it in a classroom alongside their classmates, usually on a computer or with paper booklets, with a teacher reading standardised instructions. That one fact, group-administered, matters more than almost anything else on the report, and we'll come back to it.
The CogAT isn't an achievement test. It doesn't ask what your child has been taught, no spelling lists, no times tables. Instead it presents puzzles designed to measure reasoning: the ability to spot patterns, work out relationships and solve problems that haven't been directly taught. The idea is to estimate how readily a child learns, rather than how much they've already learned.
In practice, US school districts use the CogAT mainly for two purposes:
- Screening for gifted and talented programmes. This is the big one. Many districts test every child at certain grade levels (often around grades 2-3, sometimes again later) and use the results, alongside other evidence, to decide who is identified for gifted services.
- Understanding how a child learns. Some schools use CogAT profiles to flag children whose reasoning ability looks much stronger than their classroom results, or to spot an uneven profile that suggests a particular teaching approach.
It's worth knowing that the test exists in different levels matched to age, and that your child's version was chosen by their grade. Districts also differ enormously in how they use the results, so the same score can open a door in one district and not in the one next door.
The Three Batteries: Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal
The CogAT is really three short tests, called batteries, and your child gets a score for each plus a composite:
- Verbal Battery, reasoning with words: analogies ("kitten is to cat as puppy is to..."), sentence completion, classifying words by meaning. It leans on vocabulary and language exposure as well as reasoning.
- Quantitative Battery, reasoning with numbers and quantities: number analogies, number series, working out the relationships in puzzles built from quantities. It's about numerical reasoning, not memorised arithmetic.
- Nonverbal Battery, reasoning with shapes and figures: matrices, figure classification, paper-folding-style puzzles. Because it uses almost no language, it's often the fairest battery for children still learning English.
These map loosely onto distinctions you'll meet again if your child is ever individually assessed, verbal reasoning, quantitative/fluid reasoning, visual-spatial thinking. (Our guide to the WISC-V covers the individually administered version of this territory.)
The three-battery design is deliberate. Plenty of children reason brilliantly with shapes but haven't yet built the vocabulary for verbal analogies; others are the reverse. A single overall number would bury exactly the information that makes the test useful, which is why the score report keeps the batteries separate and why the composite alone is the least interesting number on the page.
Reading the Score Report: SAS, Percentiles and Stanines
Here's where most parents get lost, because the report says the same thing three ways.
Standard Age Score (SAS). This is the headline number for each battery, scaled so that the average is 100 and the standard deviation, the typical spread of scores around that average, is 16. The top of the scale is 160. One trap for the well-read parent: most individually administered tests, including the WISC-V, use a standard deviation of 15, so the same-sounding number doesn't mean quite the same thing across tests. A SAS of 132 on the CogAT and a 132 on the WISC-V are close cousins, not twins, and neither converts neatly into the other.
Percentile Rank (PR). The most intuitive number: a percentile of 88 means your child scored as well as or better than 88 per cent of children in the comparison group. Remember percentiles bunch up in the middle, the difference between the 50th and 60th percentile is a few raw-score points, while the difference between the 95th and 99th is a much bigger gap in performance.
Stanine. The whole range squashed into a 1-9 scale, with 5 average and 9 the top band (roughly the top 4 per cent). Stanines are deliberately blunt: they stop people over-reading small differences. Two children at stanine 8 may differ by several percentile points that mean nothing in practice.
You'll also see age norms and grade norms, sometimes as APR (Age Percentile Rank) and GPR (Grade Percentile Rank). Age norms compare your child with other children born around the same time; grade norms compare them with others in the same grade, whatever their birthdays. For a child who is old or young for their grade, these two numbers can differ noticeably, and neither is "wrong", they're answering different questions. Many districts also apply local norms, comparing children only within the district, which is why a score that misses one district's gifted cutoff would clear another's.

The CogAT report usually ends with an ability profile, a short code combining a number and a letter, like 9A or 7B(V+).
In general terms: the number reflects the child's overall level across the three batteries (on the stanine-style 1-9 scale), and the letter describes the shape of the profile:
- A means the three battery scores are roughly even, an "A" child reasons at a similar level whether the material is words, numbers or shapes.
- B means one battery stands out from the other two, a single relative strength or weakness. The bracket tells you which: (V+) flags a verbal strength, (Q−) a quantitative weakness, and so on.
- C means a contrast: a clear strength in one area and a clear weakness in another.
- E flags an extreme version of these differences, gaps large enough that the composite score is genuinely misleading about the child.
So "9A" describes a child scoring near the top with an even profile, while "7B(V+)" describes an above-average child whose verbal reasoning is the standout. The publisher attaches teaching suggestions to each profile; the fine detail of those is beyond what a parent needs, but the headline is worth holding onto: the more uneven the profile, the less the composite score should be trusted on its own. An "E" profile child with a brilliant nonverbal score and a modest verbal one is not "average overall" in any meaningful sense, they're a child with a striking strength and something worth understanding on the other side.
What the CogAT Can and Can't Tell You
What it can do, it does respectably well. The CogAT is a professionally built, carefully normed test that gives a quick, reasonably reliable estimate of reasoning ability across a whole year group, which is exactly what a district needs when screening thousands of children.
But be clear about its limits:
- It's a screen, not an assessment. Your child answered multiple-choice questions in a room full of other children. Nobody observed how they approached problems, noticed the glasses left at home, or rephrased an instruction they misheard.
- It is not an IQ test in the clinical sense. It overlaps with what IQ tests measure, but an IQ score properly comes from an individually administered test given by a trained examiner, one-on-one.
- A high score is not a diagnosis of giftedness, and a modest score is not evidence against it. "Gifted" isn't a medical diagnosis at all, it's an educational category each district defines for itself. (Our article Is my child gifted? digs into what the label does and doesn't mean.)
- It measures one slice of a child. Creativity, persistence, memory, attention, emotional maturity, none of it appears on a CogAT report, and all of it shapes how a child actually does at school.
A single morning's multiple-choice performance, in other words, deserves to be read as one data point, a genuinely useful one, but never a verdict.
When a Bright Child Scores Lower Than Expected
This is the result that sends parents searching at 10pm: the child who reads above grade level, asks startling questions at dinner, and came home with stanine 5s. Before concluding the test "got it wrong", or that you've been overestimating your child, consider what group testing actually demands:
- Attention. Forty-plus minutes of sustained focus in a room full of fidgeting classmates is a real ask. A child with attention difficulties can lose whole clusters of questions to a five-minute drift, and the score can't distinguish "couldn't reason it out" from "wasn't looking".
- Anxiety. Some children freeze under testing conditions, especially if they've gathered that this test matters. An anxious child second-guesses, blanks and runs out of time on items they'd solve easily at the kitchen table.
- Processing speed. The CogAT is timed. A child who reasons deeply but slowly may simply not reach the later questions. Slow and bright is a common, routinely misread combination.
- Language background. The Verbal Battery assumes years of immersion in English. A bilingual child or recent arrival can post a striking Nonverbal score next to a modest Verbal one, a profile that says more about exposure than ability.
- The ordinary noise of childhood. A bad night's sleep, a brewing cold, a friendship drama at recess. One-off measures are vulnerable to one-off days.
If the score doesn't match the child you know, retesting is often possible, most districts allow it after a waiting interval, commonly the next testing cycle, and scores genuinely can move, particularly for younger children. Ask the school for its written retest and appeals policy.
What to Do Next, Whatever the Score Says
If the score is high: ask the district exactly what it triggers, full identification, or just the next stage of screening, and what services actually look like in your school, because "gifted programme" ranges from daily extension classes to a worksheet on Fridays. Then keep watching the child rather than the number; a high-reasoning child who is bored, anxious or perfectionistic needs more than a label.
If the score is unexpectedly low: resist both panic and dismissal. Line the result up against everything else you know, classroom work, teacher observations, what you see at home. If everything else says "thriving", the likeliest story is an off day or the limits of group testing. If the CogAT result echoes things you've already half-noticed, slow output, drifting attention, a gap between conversation and written work, treat it as a prompt to look closer, not a verdict to grieve.
When is an individual assessment worth it? When the stakes or the puzzle justify it: a child whose scores swing wildly between batteries or between years, a suspected learning difficulty or attention issue sitting alongside obvious brightness, or an appeal where the district accepts individually administered results. Is the CogAT an IQ test?
Not in the way most parents mean. It measures reasoning abilities that overlap with what IQ tests measure, but it's a group-administered screening tool, not an individual assessment given one-on-one by a psychologist. A CogAT score is a useful indicator, not a definitive measure of your child's intelligence.
What CogAT score is needed for a gifted programme?
There is no single national cutoff, each school district sets its own criteria, and many use local norms rather than national ones. Commonly, districts look for scores somewhere around the 95th percentile or above on one or more batteries, but some weigh teacher ratings, achievement data and other evidence alongside the CogAT. Ask your district for its specific identification criteria in writing.
Can my child retake the CogAT if they scored lower than expected?
Usually yes, though policies vary by district, many allow retesting after a waiting period, often the following year, and some accept appeals with additional evidence.
