Free 2-minute dyslexia check
Free Dyslexia Test for Children
Reading and spelling that stay hard no matter how much your child practises is the hallmark of dyslexia, a difference in how the brain handles the sounds in words. It has nothing to do with effort or intelligence. This free 2-minute check shows whether your child's signs are worth a closer look.
- Sounding out and spelling words is a real struggle
- Reads a word on one page, then cannot read it on the next
- Mixes up similar letters or words (b and d, was and saw)
- Far better at explaining ideas out loud than on paper
How often is this true for your child?
Finds reading harder or slower than other children their age.

What this check looks at
This quick check looks at the everyday signs of dyslexia a parent can see. If the signs add up, the full GiraffeLens screening goes further: it tests reading comprehension and spelling directly, alongside the cognitive skills underneath reading, working memory, processing speed and verbal knowledge, so you know whether to pursue a formal dyslexia assessment, and what to tell the school.
Common questions
Can an online test diagnose dyslexia?
No. No online tool can diagnose dyslexia, and neither can we. A diagnosis comes from a qualified psychologist or specialist assessor using individually administered tests. This check is a screening aid that tells you whether your child's signs are worth pursuing, before you spend hundreds or thousands on a formal assessment.
What age is this for?
The check and the full screening are designed for children aged 5 to 17. Some signs of dyslexia (like mixing up b and d) are normal in the very early years and only become a concern when they persist.
What happens after the check?
You get an instant indication. If you want the full picture, the GiraffeLens screening (free to start, $49 to unlock the full report and PDF) tests reading and spelling and the skills behind them, and gives you a report you can take to your child's school, GP or a psychologist.

GiraffeLens is an educational screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. It does not diagnose any condition and is not a substitute for assessment by a registered or licensed psychologist. If you are concerned about your child, speak with your GP, paediatrician or a qualified psychologist.
