Verbal Comprehension: What It Is and Why It Shapes So Much of School

You're reading with your son and he stops at the word reluctant. You explain it. Two pages later it's ancient, then deserve. He reads the words aloud perfectly well, it's the meanings that keep going missing. Meanwhile his cousin, same age, drops words like actually and enormous into breakfast chatter and you wonder where on earth she collects them.
What you're noticing in both children is verbal comprehension: the depth of a child's word knowledge and their ability to reason with it. It is one of the five abilities measured by the most widely used children's cognitive test, and arguably the one that touches more of school than any other, because school, from the morning instructions to the final exam question, is overwhelmingly conducted in words.
This article explains what verbal comprehension actually is, how it gets measured, why it quietly drives reading, writing and even maths, what strong and weak verbal comprehension look like at home, and, the good news, why it is the most buildable of all the cognitive abilities.
What Verbal Comprehension Actually Is
Verbal comprehension is more than vocabulary size. It's a braid of three things:
- Word knowledge, how many words a child knows, and how deeply: not just that bitter is a taste, but that disappointment can be bitter too
- Verbal reasoning, the ability to think with words: spotting what an apple and an orange have in common, grasping that borrow and lend describe the same event from different ends
- Acquired knowledge, the general understanding of the world that conversation, books and experience deposit over years
Psychologists class it as a crystallised ability: built up from experience, like sediment, rather than reflecting raw mental horsepower in the moment. That has a profound implication, verbal comprehension is partly a record of a child's opportunities. Two equally capable brains exposed to very different amounts of rich talk and reading will show very different verbal scores. (It also means the score can underestimate children learning English as an additional language, a caveat any good assessor takes seriously.)
It's worth separating verbal comprehension from two neighbours it gets confused with. It is not articulation, a child can know words deeply and pronounce them poorly, or the reverse. And it is not decoding, reading the word reluctant aloud is a print skill; knowing what it means is verbal comprehension. A child can have either without the other, which is exactly why reading problems need their source identified before they can be fixed.
How It's Measured on Tests Like the WISC-V
On the WISC-V, the most widely used children's cognitive test, with locally normed Australian, UK and US editions, the Verbal Comprehension Index is one of five index scores, alongside Visual Spatial, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory and Processing Speed. The core tasks are deceptively simple:
- Similarities, "How are a cat and a mouse alike?" The child must find the shared category (animals), and harder pairs demand increasingly abstract links. This is verbal reasoning in its purest form.
- Vocabulary, defining words of increasing rarity. Credit goes to precision: a full definition scores more than a vague gesture at the meaning.
Like all the indexes, Verbal Comprehension is reported as a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15; scores of 90-109 fall in the Average band, and descriptive labels run from Extremely Low (69 and below) to Extremely High (130 and above). A registered psychologist interprets the number in context, alongside the other indexes, language history, schooling and observation, never as a verdict on its own.
One pattern worth knowing: because the tasks are spoken, a child's verbal score can be dragged down by things that aren't word knowledge at all, retrieval difficulties, anxiety, or reluctance to elaborate ("a dog is... an animal" from a child who knows far more). Good assessors probe for this; it's another reason the surrounding picture matters as much as the score.
Why Verbal Comprehension Touches Everything at School
It's hard to overstate how verbal the school day is. Instructions, explanations, discussions, textbooks, worksheets, exam questions, nearly all of it arrives as language, and much of it as the formal, precise register sometimes called academic language: words like compare, estimate, previous, therefore that rarely appear in playground talk.
Reading comprehension leans on it hardest. In the early years, reading problems are usually decoding problems. But from about Year 3 or 4, texts begin to contain words and ideas outside everyday speech, and a child's listening vocabulary becomes the ceiling on their reading comprehension, you cannot understand on the page a word you wouldn't understand in your ear. This is one engine of the well-known "Year 3 slump": children who decoded beautifully start failing comprehension questions, not because their reading broke, but because the words outran their vocabulary.
Writing draws on the same well. The child with three words for good writes flat sentences; the child with superb, gripping and flawless has options. Precision of expression is mostly precision of vocabulary.
Maths and science are less exempt than they look. Word problems are verbal comprehension tests wearing a maths costume, fewer than, each, altogether, remaining, and a child can own the arithmetic while losing the question. (More on this in [/learn/why-word-problems-are-hard].)
There's also a compounding effect worth a parent's attention: children with strong vocabularies learn new words more easily, because each known word is a hook for the next, and they read more, meeting still more words. Word-rich children get richer. The cycle runs in reverse, too, which is precisely why deliberately feeding a word-poor cycle matters so much, and why it works.

You don't need a test to start observing. Patterns over months matter more than any single moment.
Signs of relatively strong verbal comprehension:
- Uses precise or surprising words correctly, and enjoys new ones
- Gets verbal humour, puns, double meanings, plays on words
- Follows and joins adult conversation; asks what unfamiliar words mean
- Explains ideas clearly and can rephrase when you don't understand
- Draws comparisons: "this is like that time when..."
Signs verbal comprehension may be lagging:
- Relies heavily on all-purpose words, thing, stuff, get, nice, past the age when peers have moved on
- Frequently misunderstands instructions despite hearing them, especially multi-clause ones
- Reads words aloud accurately but can't say what the passage meant
- Trouble with non-literal language, idioms taken literally, jokes that need explaining
- Avoids conversation about anything beyond the here-and-now
Two important look-alikes. A child who mishears rather than misunderstands may have a hearing or auditory processing issue, a hearing check is cheap and worth doing early. How to Build It, The Most Coachable Ability
Because verbal comprehension is accumulated rather than fixed, ordinary family life can move it. The evidence-aligned levers are unglamorous and powerful.
Talk more, and talk richer. The strongest vocabulary-building machine ever devised is conversation with an adult who uses real words. Don't simplify your vocabulary for children, explain it. Use exhausted and add "that means really, really tired". Narrate, wonder aloud, debate at dinner. Five extra minutes of genuine back-and-forth a day, compounded over years, is enormous.
Keep reading aloud, long after they can read. A child's listening comprehension runs years ahead of their reading level, so read-alouds deliver vocabulary and ideas they can't yet reach on the page. Audiobooks count fully. This is one habit worth defending into the teens.
Teach words explicitly, a few at a time. When a juicy word comes up, give a child-friendly definition, two example sentences from different contexts, and revisit it across the week. Deep knowledge of fewer words beats glancing contact with many.
Feed the knowledge base. Verbal comprehension includes knowing about the world. Documentaries, museums, cooking, maps, "why" conversations, background knowledge is what new words stick to.
Play with language. Categories games in the car ("name five things that are fragile"), "what do these two have in common?", puns, riddles. Similarities-style reasoning is trainable, and children don't notice it's training.
What doesn't work: vocabulary lists memorised without context, and correcting a child's word choices so often that they stop venturing interesting words at all. Volume and warmth beat drill.
When to Look Closer
Most word-poor moments are just gaps waiting for input. Consider a structured look when you see persistence, breadth and cost: comprehension difficulties lasting six months or more, showing up at home and school, and starting to hurt reading, writing, friendships or confidence.

Is a low verbal comprehension score the same as a language disorder?
No. The score is one snapshot of word knowledge and verbal reasoning, and it can be lowered by many things, limited reading exposure, learning English as an additional language, anxiety on the day, or a genuine language difficulty. Diagnosing a developmental language disorder requires assessment by a speech-language professional, usually alongside a psychologist.
Can verbal comprehension be improved, or is it fixed?
It is one of the most improvable cognitive areas, because it is built from accumulated knowledge rather than raw processing capacity. Rich conversation, being read to, wide reading and explicit vocabulary teaching all measurably grow the knowledge the score reflects, at any age.
My child talks constantly, can they still have weak verbal comprehension?
Yes. Fluent, confident everyday speech relies on a few thousand common words, while verbal comprehension tests reach for precise definitions, abstract relationships and less frequent vocabulary. A chatty child can still struggle to explain what two words have in common or to grasp the academic language of a classroom.
